Unsilent Night Boombox Procession

Washington Square Park arch, Greenwich Village

Unsilent Night 2008 via anjuli_ayer

If you hear a subway train screeching past your door this December, it may be the sound of the Unsilent Night procession! Celebrated since 1992, this holiday tradition is a public performance of New York composer Phil Kline's "Unsilent Night", an avant-garde piece of music that is performed by playing four separate tracks on many boomboxes held by participants.

Bring your own stereo, download the mp3, or use a boom box from Phil's private collection and join the parade that begins in Washington Square Park and marches to Tompkins Square Park. Although NYC is the flagship event, the performance has spread across the country and the world, with as many as 30 performances planned worldwide.
