A stabbing at 2024 Mohegan Avenue in the Bronx turned deadly after one victim was killed in a violent attack.

The school building at Mohegan Ave and East 179th houses multiple schools, but the location was reported as the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation, a public school. The attack involved an 18-year-old suspect and two victims aged 15 and 16.

The school complex is in the West Farms / East Tremont area, just south of the Bronx Zoo.

In a press conference at 2pm, the Mayor and NYPD officials updated the situation: The argument between the students may have been an on-going issue that escalated for about two weeks, since school started. The 18 y/o stabbed two other students with a spring-loaded knife similar to a switchblade, and the student that died suffered a stab wound to the chest. There were 15-20 other students in the classroom at the time.

The school complex involved in this incident does not have metal detectors, but will now add random screening with a handheld metal detector for an indeterminate amount of time going forward.

Update: New details after the suspect had been detained supported that the stabbing was the result of the two victims bullying the attacker in the weeks previous. The suspect bought the knife online and used it in the attack, although an Amazon listing shows that model of knife is restricted from being shipped to New York, Massachusetts, and California.

Sadly, in an interview with DNAinfo, friends of the attacker say that his mother has been stranded in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Irma, and likely is difficult to reach with info about what has happened.
