Young Boy Dies After Fall Through Ice of Strack Pond

Forest Park, Queens — After adventuring onto thin ice just after 4pm, the 11-year-old boy broke through and fell into frigid water, and sadly has been pronounced dead.
Firefighters and scuba divers raced to rescue the child after being alerted to the situation by another boy that accompanied him to the pond. It seems that the 11-year-old had rescued the other boy from the pond earlier, but was then unable to escape the frigid water.
Although the boy fell through thin ice, he then became trapped under solid ice and was unable to find a way out. He was pulled from Strack Pond by first responders who broke through the ice, began CPR, and loaded him into an ambulance. He was not breathing at the scene and died later at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. Several of the rescuers were treated for hypothermia after performing the rescue without protective gear.
We implore parents - make sure your kids know the ice in the city of New York, on these lakes and ponds, is not safe -#FDNY Deputy Chief Healy from the scene at Forest Park #Queens, where a child was removed from the water after falling through the ice https://t.co/hRjTPmZLHn pic.twitter.com/6CD3T9EyaV
