Today, Google Maps introduced a new feature that takes its mapping efforts indoors and adds indoor floorplans and store directories to Google Maps. The floorplans, currently only available on Android devices which have upgraded to the newest version of Google Maps, will show the layout of select stores and allow users to locate a department within the store or explore each floor of the building using a select button next to the map.
In New York City, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Red Hook IKEA are among the first stores to incorporate the new feature, and their interior layouts were immediately available on Android devices after downloading version 6.0 of Google Maps.
Much like in their standard maps application, Google uses information from your phone’s wifi connection to pinpoint you on a map, which gives a good indication why Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s recently decided to install free wifi in their stores.
