The Woolworth Building opens, becoming the tallest building in the world for 17 years
It's the most famous building designed by celebrated architect Cass Gilbert and was not only a piece of art, but a revolutionary step in skyscraper history, still standing as one of the tallest buildings in Lower Manhattan. Although Woolworth's department store may be gone, a bit of the legacy remains in malls across the country: In 1963, Woolworth's purchased Kinney Shoes, a company founded in 1894 in upstate New York. After a decline in Woolworth department stores in the '80s and '90s, the company focused more on developing smaller brands of shoe stores. Following acquisitions of Champs Sports and Eastbay, one brand of smaller shoe stores would prove successful, and by November 2, 2001, the former Woolworth company would rename itself Foot Locker!
