The Governor's Office announced today that there will be new plate design coming to New York state.

Now that the blue-and-white "Empire" plates are showing their age, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to vote on the next design, which are all pretty similar to the outgoing blue-and-white design, but add in touches of gold, New York's other state color.

Voting will be open for two weeks, ending September 2nd, at ny.gov. Four out of five of the new designs replace the state nickname, "Empire State", with the state motto, "EXCELSIOR", while the other one simply features a background photo of the (guess what)… Mario M Cuomo bridge! Vote for your favorite and cross your fingers that the next plate rollout goes smoother than the last one.

If you're not happy with any of the plain options, you can pay a bit more and deck your ride out with dozens of other design options, including September 11th remembrance plates, "I ❤️ NY", and a custom New York City design.

The votes are in, and the new plate will be the blue, gold, and white plate featuring both Niagara Falls and the NYC skyline. The design is the most similar to the previous "Empire" plates, which had the landmarks design across the top of the plate.
