NYPD officer Brian Groves is shot while chasing a suspected drug dealer in a stairwell of the Seward Park Extension NYCHA housing on the Lower East Side

The shooting took place around 3:40am when officer Groves and his partner, Erick Corniel, encountered a man in a stairwell with a revolver. After running after him from the 22nd floor down to the 19th floor, the suspect turned and shot officer Groves in the chest and was able to escape.

Officer Groves was saved by his Kevlar bullet-resistant vest but later retired due to his injuries

Despite a massive police response and presence in the area for weeks after the shooting, the suspect remains unidentified and at large to this day.
