The original deck of the Bayonne Bridge opens from Staten Island to New Jersey and becomes the longest arch bridge in the world

On opening day, 7,000 pedestrians and 17,000 vehicles passed over the bridge. By the 2000s, larger ship traffic necessitated raising the roadbed 60 feet, and a second level was added to the bridge without closing the bottom level to traffic during construction.
