The old Tappan Zee Bridge opens to traffic, crossing the Hudson River at one of its widest points and becoming the longest bridge in New York State

The bridge carried more traffic than expected and outlasted its original 50 year term of service, and was replaced by a new Tappan Zee Bridge in 2017.
