The Sonic the Hedgehog balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade knocks down a streetlight in Columbus Circle, injuring a child and an off-duty police officer

During the TV broadcast, footage from the test run was aired as the balloon had deflated and was intended to promote the video game. Another balloon, Rex the dinosaur, also struck a streetlight and exploded, but did not knock down any debris. Two other balloons would knock down streetlights, the Cat in the Hat in 1997 and an M&M in 2005.
